Why I'm Always So Happy

People often ask me, “Why are you always so happy?” I usually answer something to the effect of, “Life is too short, so I am going to choose happiness.” Although this statement remains true in my life, after engaging in self-reflection, I realize that this statement fails to explain why I am truly and genuinely happy – because I am a chosen and redeemed child of God. As a child of God, I can live each day happy and worry-free because I have a faithful Lord and shepherd who keeps me under his wing. When God is the leader and center of my life, I have nothing to fear. My favorite Bible verse at the moment is Jeremiah 29:11 which states, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”

Don’t get me wrong, this is often easier said than done. I have lost close family members, been heartbroken by friends and boyfriends, and gone through moments of sickness where I did not think I would truly ever recover. These low moments in my life left me questioning whether or not God truly cares about me, because I thought that if he did care he would not let me go through such pain and heartache. However, it is especially during these low moments that I turn to the Lord for comfort and guidance. God’s Word and prayer provide me greater comfort than anything else. It is through His Word and prayer that I am reminded that I am saved by grace and that I am a redeemed child of God. It is in His Word that I am reminded that God’s plan is bigger than my plan, and that he will give me hope and a future. No trials and tribulations could ever take that away from me, and for that I am thankful.

So yes, I live my life to the fullest knowing that God has redeemed me and given me a new life through Christ my Savior through baptism. I am content in the fact that God provides all I need. When God is the leader and center of my life, I do not need to worry, because he has a plan for me. Living worry-free allows me to truly be genuinely happy and content. I hope to live my life as a blessing and light for others, so that they too can come to know the total peace and comfort that comes with being a Christian.
